5 Surprising Reasons Why Science Matters for Ki

Did you ever think, “I’ll never need this” while you were in science classes growing up? If so, you’re not alone. Many of today’s adults grew up believing half of what they learned in school would be useless once they graduated. But science is critically useful in everyday life. And it’s important for kids. But how?

I’m Arizona school assembly performer Graham Rogers. My amazing series of assembly programs reinforces what your child is learning in school. Each month, I write articles just like this one for busy parents and school administrators.

There are many reasons kids need science. Some are for everyday use now. Others will benefit from them as they get older. In this article, I’ll detail 5 reasons why science matters for children.

Why Kids Need Science #1: Understand the World Around Them

Children are naturally curious. They’re built that way from birth! They want to know what’s going on around them. They want to know how things tick. And the more they understand the world, the safer they will be.

The last thing you want is for your child to ‘figure stuff out for themselves.’ Take the opportunity when your child asks you a question. Explain it to them as best you can. And if you don’t know the answer, you can both work together to find it, either online or preferably in the library.

Why Kids Need Science #2: Stimulates Their Minds

Learning about science helps kids cognitively. The more they learn, the more they exercise their brains. Most people don’t realize this, but your brain is a muscle. If you don’t exercise it, it becomes weaker. Think about jogging or working out. If you stop, you’ll soon backslide.

In learning terms, educators are always concerned about the ‘Summer Slide.’ It’s the phenomenon where kids fail to retain information over summer break because they cease active learning. Learning science and how it affects our daily lives is a great way to stave off the summer slide.

Why Kids Need Science #3: Job Skills

Science continues to advance at a staggering pace. Digital technology continues to blaze forward. With advances in AI and other technological fields, science is dominating our lives. If your child wants to excel after graduating, getting a science-based degree is one of the smartest things they can do.

While the pay for these advanced jobs is nice, they’ll enjoy their working days more doing something they enjoy that stimulates them. A well-rounded education in science is the perfect way to ensure they have more career choices as they get older.

Why Kids Need Science #4: Research

What if your child decides not to pursue a career in science? That’s okay. There are other fundamental ways science helps kids. Science helps fine-tune research skills. And this applies to any number of subjects.

When anyone researches the right way, they have to sift through a lot of data. Do it the wrong way and you’ll be digging forever for information. And you might only turn up the wrong stuff. But science teaches us to be more tactical with our research. The result? We find more faster and more efficiently. This holds for English, history, and any number of other topics or subjects.

There is another benefit, too. Learning to research properly helps kids organize better. They become skilled at organizing what they find. They learn how to organize their thoughts. They then turn out a paper or project that’s well-structured in less time.

Why Kids Need Science #5: Develop Creativity

Many people consider science to be rigid and boring. Not true! Science is a wonderful way to spark creativity. Many scientific advancements came to be simply because someone had an idea. They said, “What if?” and developed their ideas. Other times, someone saw a problem. Through trial and error (the Scientific Method_ they found a solution to that problem.

Scientists need to be creative to discover a path to a solution. And they must persevere to find the right solution that works for the person or group having the problem. That means creativity!
